As I’ve brought plants back indoors (and re-potted some), I’ve added a fresh layer of moss to the top of the soil. I love that it makes them look springtime green as we head into the black and whiteness of winter.

Tufts of moss can be found around streams and in wooded areas. Gently pull and roll-up a section at a time. If there’s soil attached to the underside, that’s fine. (I always “pick” moss conservatively, never completely stripping an area. I want to have some to come back to in a few years!) Let moss soak in a bucket filled with water. Fit moss pieces onto the base of the plant – tucking together here and there.
