Welcome to the Design Issue: an up-close and personal look at a transformation a year in the making — the one we called Project Refresh.

Project Refresh was born in spring 2015, though I didn’t know it. I planned to change one room. One. Fast-forward a year, and not a room on the first floor was untouched as we raced to be ready for the Newtown Historical Society’s House & Garden tour. And in between was a lot of work, vision, and perseverance.

Some of you were able to join us for the June tour — what a wonderful surprise! But if you weren’t, we thought it would be fun to take the tour to you.

Dear Nora, can I just move in? I am rarely envious but I’m coveting everything in your fabulous house and now have to start on my own refresh! We have a 1911 Sears kit prairie-four square with country and nautical decor. I’m inspired by your magazine and now will be painting and repurposing! Thank you for your seasonal magazine. I look forward to the next issue.

These videos are fun and informative. You have maintained the historical character of your country home while infusing a calm yet updated palette. I have always been a fan of classical decor myself. You really hit the nail on the head with the editing of items. I think the sparseness helps to create the freshness in your revamped space. Love every single thing. It was definitely worth all the effort put forth. Lovely Nora!

Yes,, the simplicity of classic decor and palette help define the character of this historic house. No “trendy” items here! Love the total embrace of nature and all things “natural,” especially the engravings and various collected items.

Congrats to preserving a historical home with family comfort.
    You did a terrific job!
Tell me: what brand of paint did you use for your whites, shade of white, and finish for baseboards, ceilings, walls? PLEASE. I like the whites but DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. Are they all the same brand, shade BUT DIFFERENT textures?
Also how will you clean the white denim Are they slipcovers to be laundered?
Any tutitorial on making the window box? All help will be appreciated!

Nora, what a stunning “refresh” you have achieved in your home. I never cease to be amazed at your talent, gifting of interior design. What an absolute pleasure to look through your home. There is much to study and learn as I “feast” on each image.
    Very well done!!

I love, love, love your new look, Nora!! You have the amazing ability to change everything…and still keep your own fabulous style!

(But back to the old family room for just a minute…I wonder if you’d be willing to share the name of that deep, gray green color on your walls? I have a kitchen that is calling for that color! ~smile~)
